On-the-Job PhD Program

Should you first gain professional experience or continue your studies and earn your PhD? As a participant in an on-the-job PhD program, you can gain professional experience and earn your PhD at the same time! And Manz offers the perfect conditions to do so.

On-the-Job PhD Program

We have offered an on-the-job PhD program in our core technologies of automation, testing and measurement technology, laser processing technology, metallization, wet chemistry, and vacuum coating since 2008.

This program is open to first-class college graduates who want to simultaneously conduct scientific research and participate in our challenging practical projects. In doing so, you reconcile the interests of our company and those of the university. Ideal candidates for the program have already prepared their final project or completed an internship at Manz, and have already found a PhD advisor.

In addition to providing financial aid, Manz offers a three-year employment contract, which means you will receive systematic support in your field of study from colleagues with experience in the industry and be able to establish contacts at numerous universities, colleges, and research institutes. Manz generally has an interest in offering you an open-ended employment contract after you have completed your dissertation.

Simply get in touch with us and let us know your topic of choice, and we will examine your application together with the respective department.

Boris M., PhD student in thin-film testing and measurement technology:

Why did you decide to enroll in the on-the-job PhD program at Manz AG:

“After spending several years studying electrical engineering at the University of Stuttgart in a rather general program, I finally wanted to concentrate on one field that I was particularly interested in and also decide what to work on and how to proceed on my own. My passion is photovoltaics – and by enrolling in the program at Manz, I made my biggest wish come true and look forward to going to work everyday.

Manz AG is a high-tech engineering firm which is active in photovoltaics, among other fields. Manz’s products have an extremely high standard of quality, which requires an excellent understanding of solar cell physics, particularly when manufacturing equipment used to manufacture and test solar cells. The expertise of building highly automated equipment coupled with theoretical fundamentals was what pushed me to go to Manz. The resulting research and development is seamlessly put to work in the company’s new products, and everyone that is involved in building a new piece of equipment or a new process is later proud to see their own work as part of a completed machine. I constantly learn new things at Manz that will help me in my later professional life: project-based thinking, defining and adhering to milestones, keeping costs in mind, and completing sub-projects while adhering to tight deadlines. In choosing Manz, I selected a very appealing company, and in choosing the on-the-job PhD program, I selected an outstanding opportunity.”

How long is the on-the-job PhD program?

“To answer this question, you need to be realistic. Conducting scientific research is difficult anywhere you go. In general, Manz offers three years to complete the program. Submitting a dissertation in this period of time is a challenging goal, but it is possible as long as the work and the results meet the scientific requirements. Experience, however, tends to show that closer to four years will pass before submitting such a piece of work and having it evaluated.”

What does a typical day at Manz look like for a student in the on-the-job PhD program?

“On the whole, my work does not differ much from the work carried out by my salaried coworkers. The main difference is that I continuously read scientific publications and also have to write some of my own. But just like my colleagues, I also have to complete my work properly and always keep my eye on the major goal I am working toward.”
